Schedule

Lubbock Lawn Treatment Schedule

Timing is everything in Lubbock. Our program follows Texas A&M AgriLife Extension guidance and South Plains weather.

RoundTimingTreatment
1Late February–mid-MarchPre-emergent for crabgrass and sandbur; broadleaf spot spray
2Late April–MayFertilizer once lawn is actively growing; second pre-emergent split; weed spot spray
3JuneLight fertilizer and iron as needed; nutsedge and spurge control
4July–AugustIron and micronutrients; grub monitoring; spot treat weeds
5Mid-August–mid-SeptemberFinal fertilizer; fall pre-emergent for winter weeds
6November–JanuaryDormant broadleaf weed control where needed

For Bermudagrass, AgriLife recommends 0.5 to 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application, only while the grass is actively growing. Buffalograss needs far less, often one or two light feedings a year.

Yellow Grass

Why Lubbock Lawns Turn Yellow (and How We Fix It)

Yellow grass in Lubbock is often not a nitrogen problem. Local soils are alkaline, and high pH makes iron unavailable to plants even when the soil contains it — a condition called iron chlorosis: yellow blades, or yellow leaves with green veins on shrubs and trees.

We treat chlorosis with chelated iron and micronutrients that stay available at high pH. For stubborn cases, we recommend a soil test so you aren't paying for products the lawn can't use.

Root Cause

Weed Control Starts With a Healthy Lawn

The best weed control in Lubbock is a thick lawn that shades the soil. Herbicide alone can't fix bare spots. That's why we also check:

  • Mowing height — scalped lawns let sunlight reach weed seeds
  • Sprinkler coverage — dry spots thin out and fill with sandbur and spurge
  • Overwatering — soggy low areas grow nutsedge
  • Compaction — hard clay favors goathead and knotweed

Questions

Lawn Treatment and Weed Control: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get rid of sandburs in my Lubbock yard?
Stop sandburs with a spring pre-emergent applied from late February to mid-March, before seeds germinate, followed by a second split application in late spring. Existing sandburs can be spot treated, but a thicker lawn is what keeps them from coming back.
How long after lawn treatment can pets go outside?
For most liquid treatments, keep pets and kids off the lawn until the product has dried, typically a few hours. Granular products are usually safe once watered in. We always follow the specific product label and leave instructions after each visit.
Will weed control kill my grass?
No. We use selective herbicides labeled for your grass type. Some products that are safe on Bermuda can damage St. Augustine or zoysia, which is why we identify your grass before treating.
Why do I still have weeds after one treatment?
Perennial weeds like bindweed and nutsedge usually need more than one application, and weed seeds already in the soil can sprout between rounds. Service calls between scheduled rounds are free for program customers.
Is lawn treatment worth it if I only water two days a week?
Yes. A fertilized, weed-free lawn with deep roots uses limited water better than a thin lawn competing with weeds. We adjust fertilizer rates so grass is not pushed to grow more than your watering can support.
Are you licensed to apply weed control in Texas?
Yes. Commercial pesticide and herbicide applications in Texas require a license from the Texas Department of Agriculture.
Is your weed control safe for kids and pets?
Yes, once dry. We apply at label rates, leave a notice after every visit, and time granular applications to your watering day so product activates safely. Keep pets and kids off treated areas until dry, per the label.
Can you treat just my front yard or a specific problem area?
Yes. Spot treatments for a single bed, strip or problem area are available if you don't want a whole-yard program yet.
