Many Lubbock soils contain clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. A patio laid on a thin sand bed over native soil will heave, sink and separate. We excavate below the finished height and build a compacted crushed rock base in layers.
Caliche can sit a few inches down in one corner and much deeper in another. We excavate to consistent depth and compact over it rather than building on uneven hard spots.
