The base is watered and compacted with a plate compactor until it's firm and smooth. A soft base leads to footprints and dips within the first year.
We slope the base so water moves away from the house and use turf with perforated or fully permeable backing. Lubbock storms drop heavy rain fast, and turf must drain quickly.
Wind is the enemy of loose turf. We secure perimeters at close spacing, glue seams on seam tape and tuck edges against borders so wind cannot get underneath.
A weed barrier goes between the base and turf. Infill weighs the turf down, supports the blades and helps with odor control in dog areas.
